Hurricane Shutters – Which Type are Best?

Hurricane Shutters – a necessity in our part of the world. Both protection & aesthetics come into play. Here are descriptions of the 4 most popular options for coastal climates. We hope this is helpful to you whether you are contemplating building or in the throes of a rebuild or renovation.

Hurricane Shutter Types

Hurricane Shutters

Accordion Shutters – medium price, do slightly better on larger surface areas than roll downs, and require less maintenance than wooden shutters. As one of our social media followers pointed out, accordion shutters “give a more modern feel.”

Wooden Shutters – cheaper to make, not as durable as aluminium, more maintenance, but both aluminium and wooden shutters survived Dorian. Often depends on size of window and age of shutter. Larger surface areas are more difficult to protect. These are more traditional and many, epecially on the Cays, find this architectural feature very aesthetically pleasing.

Roll-down Shutters – most expensive, some maintenance due to use of a motor & tracks, easy to use as no manual labour involved; usually have a manual option. Recommended for 2 storey homes.

Impact Resistant Glass – many builders recommend this as well as shutters. Over large surface areas they also will fail which is why traditional Bahamian architecture features smaller windows. An extremely forceful impact would very likely necessitate replacement of the window which is more expensive than replacing a shutter.
